    Summary
By thoroughly analyzing the characteristics of trade and industrial policies of the major ASEAN countries, this research attempts to understand the ever-changing specialization system between Korea and ASEAN and make ASEAN's position clear for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
The composition of this research is as follows. In Chapter II, it examines the macro-economic trends for ASEAN and the evolution of trade policies such as exchange rates, capital and interest since 1985. Chapter III reviews ASEAN export-oriented industrialization and its direct investment structure. Chapter IV and V examines the development of trade and industrial policies of the major East Asian countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan, in the 1980s. Based on the new changes in trade, and direct investment and technical cooperation between Korea and the major ASEAN countries, Korea's corresponding policy is suggested in Chapter VI. Major results and summary are provided in Section V

    Summary
Strategic partnerships in research and development (R&D) are a new form of international relationship distinguishable from more traditional forms of joint ventures and licensing arrangements by three main characteristics. First, they are focused on joint knowledge production and sharing as opposed to a one-way transfer of technology-where knowledge is understood to include research and development, as well as design, engineering, marketing and management capabilities. Second, they are frequently contractual in nature with little or no equity involvement by the participants. Third, they tend to be part of the longer term planning activity of the firm rather than simply an opportunistic response to short-term financial gain.
After briefly tracing the extent to which R&D has become both more collaborative and more internationalized, the paper offers an explanation for this process and an illustration of strategic partnering activity in the context of the European Strategic Programme for Research and Development on Information Technology (ESPRIT). Lastly, it draws out some of the implications of this new form of international competition for the newly industrialized economies (NIEs).

    Summary
This book is a compilation of the papers and comments from the 'Seminar on Development of Relations between Korea and Socialist Countries and Prospects for South-North Korean Relations' organized by the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy.
Socialist countries have recently undergone a sudden change in political, economic and social reform due to the spread of Gorbachev's perestroika policy. This is expected to affect Korea's diplomatic policy toward socialist countries including the Soviet Union, China, East European countries and North Korea. This seminar provided perspectives for development of relations between Korea and Socialist countries and suggested perspectives of economic and social integration after German unification.
