Economic developmentDownloadContentSummaryThis paper outlines problems in Korea's foreign aid policy and suggests improvements through a comparison with advanced countries.
Once a beneficiary of aid from advanced countries and international organizations, South Korea has become the 10th-largest economy in the world in terms of trade and investment. Korea's high levels of trade and investment have led it to become a donor rather than a recipient of aid.
Although Korea has had frequent economic interchanges with developing economies, its reach is still rather limited. Therefore, this paper suggests with Korea's entry into the OECD, it should build a foreign aid framework that strengthens its relationship with developing countries. This official development assistance is expected to change the relationship between Korea and other developing countries to one of mutual dependency, thus increasing Korea's international influence. -

Trade policy, Environmental policyDownloadContentSummaryIn trade, the environment has become a source of conflict, with economic development having negative effects on the environment. To mitigate these trade conflicts, multilateral environmental agreements are formed.
Agreements on trade and environmental are related to the following issues. First, multilateral trade regulations are used to protect the global and regional environments. Second, each nation's regional environment measures have influenced their trade.
This report emphasizes that during negotiations, it is important to discuss normative harmony between trade and environment. More than this, it is important to conduct analytical study on areas of the economy to reveal the correlation between the economy and the environment. Such studies would have a positive effect on negotiations and the overall well-being of the public.
What is more, this report implies that correlation analysis can have a substantial influence on international standards. Before this can happen, studies have to incorporate institutional and legal issues related to trade and the environment. -

Economic cooperationDownloadContentSummaryAsia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has taken long-term development direction for Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation through APEC Leaders' meetings two times so far.
The first summit was held in Seattle, USA, in 1993, where they adopted a broad vision of regional free trade and investment. At the second summit in Bogor, Indonesia, in 1994, APEC concluded with the APEC Economic Leaders' Declaration of Common Resolve with the goal of free and open trade and investment by 2020. It is expected that the Osaka summit, which adopted open regionalism as a fundamental rule, will settle more concrete action plans for implementation of complete trade liberalization.
APEC adopted the principle of open regionalism, namely, regional integration without trade discrimination against other economies. This open regionalism contrasts sharply with the approach taken in most regional cooperation agreement including the European Union (EU) and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Following the launching of the World Trade Organization (WTO), APEC is expected to play a leading role in intra-regional economic cooperation and the creation of a new world economic order based on the multilateral trading system. -

DownloadContentSummaryChina's domestic market has recorded high growth that is expected to continue over the next 10 years and cause China's GDP to quadruple by 2010.
This report focuses on the structural features of China's market, especially its entry barriers, analyzing the market by product, income level and region. This paper will also look at how entry barriers put in place by the central government and local governments can be lowered to promote an advance into China's market.
The Chinese government has been gradually relaxing its restrictions on imports and retail distribution. Moreover, its latent purchasing power is expected to be realized on a gradual basis, serving as an opportunity for China to accelerate the process of opening its economy to globalization.
Barriers to trade and an inflexible distribution mechanism will be obstacles to foreign investment, and competition between foreign investors has escalated since a market economy was introduced in 1992.
