Environmental policyDownloadContentSummaryThe Chinese economy has grown rapidly through reform and the introduction of an open-door policy in 1978, recording 12.8 percent growth in 1992. This paper summarizes the features of the Chinese economy, including high growth, periodic fluctuations of economic growth and the balance of payments.
This paper maintains that rapid growth has led to a number of environmental problems. Industrialization has let to increased emissions, especially in industries such as heavy chemicals, metalwork, construction and manufacturing. Since newly industrialized facilities are located in coastal districts, its pollutive emissions have negative consequences for neighboring countries. Moreover, the structure of energy consumption of China is coal-oriented, resulting in the high production of pollution waste. -
